Chicago, Illinois
Clara B. McNeil was born on August 3, 1942, in Marks, Mississippi, to the late Ida V. Garmon and Tom B. Garmon. Clara accepted Christ at an early age at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She peacefully made her journey from this life on August 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience.
Clara moved to Chicago in 1956 with her parents and siblings, where she attended William E. Gladstone Elementary School. Throughout her life, she worked in many different occupations, beginning as a housemaid before finding her true calling in the bartending industry. Clara worked at several well-known bar establishments across Chicago, including Sandy's, Ted's Cocktail Lounge, and Lakes. Once she stepped into bartending, she never looked back--she loved connecting with people, moving around, and being part of the city's vibrant nightlife.
Beyond her work, Clara was known for her warmth and her ability to bring joy to those around her. She was famous for her sweet potato pies, which became a family tradition at every holiday. Clara loved to dance, sing, and spend her evenings watching her favorite stories on TV. She truly had a way of making everyone feel at home in her presence.
Clara leaves to cherish her memory and love: her children, Delmar Garmon, Curtis (Lisa) Garmon, and Melanie McNeil. She also leaves behind grandchildren Latisha (Eric), Jason, Jamille, Curtis Jr., Telisa, Lakeyia, and Marsha; siblings George (Alice), Demple Mae (Joe), Priscilla, Tommy, and Frank (Doris); and 13 great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by her nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and many more who loved her dearly.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents, Ida V. Garmon and Tom B. Garmon; her sister, Essie Mae Garmon; and her dear friend, Virgil Harbour.
Clara's life was a testament to resilience, faith, and family. Though her physical presence will be missed, the memories she created and the love she shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
