OBITUARY
Ethel Doretha Bridges Kelly Johnson Brundidge was born May 3, 1935 in Columbia, Mississippi, to Martha Guy-Kelly and Roman J. Bridges. Another significant individual in her life was her stepfather, Arlee Kelly. All three preceded her in death.
Ethel confessed hope in Christ at an early age while at St. John Baptist Church in Expose, MS. She later joined Greater Harvest Baptist Church and Tribe of Judah Worldwide Ministry, both in Chicago, IL.
Ethel was the oldest of six children. Those who preceded her in death were: Karen J. Bridges, Minnie Kelly-Pollard, Reginald J. Bridges, and Calvin D. Bridges.
Ethel attended Marion County Training School, which later became Jefferson High School in Columbia, MS. She continued to live in Columbia until 1957, when her family moved to Chicago. She brought with her to Chicago her three children, Avery, Sandra and Sharlatta.
On July 11, 1961, Ethel married Percy Johnson Jr., of Chicago. From this union seven children were born, Shelia, Lue, Percy, Patrick, Dwayne, Kim, and Lamar.
In November of 1978, Ethel married Edward Brundidge, of Chicago. They were married until his death, in 2020. No children were born from this union.
Ethel enjoyed working a variety of different jobs and professions in Chicago. Her first job was as a furniture upholster. Next she began working at Eckrich Meat Company, where she rose through the ranks and by 1982, became a Certified Meat Inspector. She supervised 450 employees. Even though she loved this job, being in and out of freezers, didn't help the joints! So, she went back to school. After graduating from the American Security Training Institute in 1983, she began working for the Skokie Valley Detective Agency. But if that wasn't enough, on March 31, 1989, Ethel graduated from PTC Career Academy as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She retired about five years later.
Ethel loved gardening, cooking, fishing, and being with her family, especially her "grands and great-grands!" They could do no wrong in her eyes. She literally always had an open door, where many would come by, sit a spell and/or eat. Better yet she would go to her garden and give her collard greens, tomatoes, strawberries and more to anyone who wanted something. Mom wasn't known for her baking (that honor goes to her brother), but no one could top her collard greens and dressing!
She leaves to cherish in her memory: Brother, Otha Lee Kelly Sr.(Arlee) of Jackson, MS; 10 children, Avery C. Bridges-Wiley (Jackie), Sandra R. Kelly, and Sharlatta A. Kelly of Chicago; Shelia C. Johnson of Beloit, WI ; Percy P. Johnson (Vickie) of Chicago; Lue Y. Johnson and Patrick B. Johnson of Beloit, WI; Dwayne C. Johnson of Chicago; Kim Johnson of Beloit, WI; and Lamar Johnson (Katrina) of Chicago; over 80 grandchildren (this includes great, great, great-grandchildren,) cousins, and friends.
