Chicago, Illinois
Marjorie "Margie" Slaughter, born on February 9, 1944, in Wiggins, Mississippi, was a devoted Christian, a dedicated professional, and an unwavering pillar of support for her family and community. Her journey from Wiggins to Chicago, Illinois, was marked by a spirit of resilience and determination. Marjorie's story is a testament to the power of love, faith, and the human spirit. "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.'" (Proverbs 31:28-29)
Margie's professional life was as diverse as it was long. Prior to becoming an Executive Secretary at the American Jewish Committee, she worked as a Taxi Driver, bringing her vibrant spirit to the streets of Chicago. Her role at the American Jewish Committee spanned 25 years, during which she proved herself to be reliable, diligent, and supportive. Her love for the arts led her to work with renowned Chicago sculptor Richard Hunt and later at the University of Chicago Lab School. Her life was a testament to the power of dedication, determination, and genuine love for what one does.
Margie was a loving mother to her children Tracey (Reginald) Slaughter-Hardrick, Jarryl Slaughter and Christina Slaughter, and a doting grandmother to Allyson Slaughter and Reginald Hardrick Jr. She also leaves behind her brother Kenneth (Darlene) Fairley, sister Alice Fairley, and goddaughter Dominique Price. She was preceded in death by her parents Andrew Jackson Sr. and Alice Fairley, her brothers Andrew Jackson Jr., Jessie Dewitt, Vaughn Wendell, Millard Bruce , and Addison Henry Fairley, her sister Rena Stewart, and grandson Christopher Tracey Hardrick.
Margie was deeply committed to her faith. As a church secretary and faithful member of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Elder William E. Whitehead and Pastor Byron Whitehead Sr., she served her community with grace and dedication. Her faithfulness and devotion were a light to all who knew her. "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord." (Matthew 25:23)
